Physical Education and Sports

Our sportspersons today have risen to the strata of celebrities around the globe and we can’t deny their active role in bringing name and fame to our country. As a result, people have backed out from their age old practice of giving importance to academics only and finding sports as a vibrant career option. Sportspersons after retiring from their active sports careers can also take up Coaching in their respective fields.

Aptitudes that help

Future sportspersons need to have lots of energy, enthusiasm, physical fitness, patience, perseverance and a sporting spirit to progress towards their aim. Apart from the personal aptitudes, young talents need suitable environment and encouragement to achieve success.

How to get through

A flair for physical fitness and sports should be induced in a child from the very beginning by parents/guardians. His/her talent in specific sports has to be identified early.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and its state level branches work on identifying, nurturing and training young talents coming from village to district or state levels. SAI has sports hostels (SSP) across the country at district levels including those promoted by state authorities. Students qualified in the test conducted by SAI get the opportunity to stay in its district/state level sports hostels to avail its training. SSP provides the entire sports kit, medical allowances and scholarships to its students who can also pursue their studies in schools/colleges simultaneously. SAI selects sports talents from some specific sports categories like Athletics, Hockey, Volley Ball, Basket Ball, Badminton, Gymnastics etc.

Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala, Bangalore and Kolkata offer 3-year Bachelor degrees in Physical Education (BPED) after +2 or 1-year BPED after graduation. Other than this, there are 2- year MPED and 1 year diploma courses in sports coaching offered by these institutions. For those who are interested in a Sports Coaching course can go for any of these courses provided they have an outstanding career in sports behind them.

Career avenues

Career options in different areas like fitness and health, sports medicine, sports journalism, leisure and adventure, sports management, recreation etc. are open to candidates holding a degree in Sports and Physical Education.

They can work as sports and physical education teachers, as instructors in schools and colleges and as coaches in SAI, state sports outfits, privately managed sports clubs etc. They can do their jobs as managers of sports and leisure clubs. Since a growing interest in health and fitness among people is witnessed today, fitness and health related professionals are in great demand.

Sports persons/players after their active sports-life can have a career in sports journalism and sports administration also. Corporates and government departments call athletes for various executive ranks depending upon their educational qualifications.

Based on the achievements at different levels like inter-school/inter-university, national/state/international, reputed organisations like Indian Railways, Air India, ONGC, SAIL etc. appoint sports persons in different cadres.

Scholarships, sponsorships, contracts, increase in awards and prizes, media telecast etc. have enhanced the growing interest in people to opt for sports and Physical Education as a career option.
