Students may opt for a one-year Bachelor degree in Library
Science [B Lib.] after graduation and go on to earn a
Master’s degree in the subject. For those who wish
to be in academics in this discipline should aim for
M Phil/PhD degree. Many universities in India offer courses
in Library and Information Science. The advent of digital
data storage facilities like Compact Discs, internet
and electronic mail etc. and use of multimedia techniques
for documentation impel the students to acquire relevant
computer skills. In fact advance curriculums in several
universities/ institutions incorporate IT.
Short duration courses in the subject are conducted
by a number of Polytechnics, universities and colleges
which one can opt after +2 onwards.
Career avenues
A good number of opportunities are in store for candidates having a Master’s
degree in Library Science in educational institutions, Government Departments,
embassies, private and public corporates and libraries, parliament and
assemblies, research institutes, NGOs, R and D departments of industries
etc. In most of the schools, colleges and universities of India however
the transition has not been as rapid as expected. But, the demand of
the time will see to it that technology takes over all old-fashioned
libraries sooner than latter. Requirement for modern managers of knowledge
will soar.
